I've just bought a new Vaio T13 ultrabook, provided with an ULV Core i5 Ivy Bridge cpu.
The laptop has a very cool palm rest, so it seems not suffer from overheating at all. Inexplicably the fan runs at maximum speed already with cpu at around 45°C, which means that even browsing the web causes a loud noise!
Ultrabook should be tipically completely silent, while Vaio T13, just browsing the internet, is much more loud than my previous cheap Asus with core I3 at full stress! No "quiet mode" seems possible to be set in Vaio Control Centre (options completely missing), neither software like speedfan was successful in reducing fan speed and noise.
Is there the possibility of a prompt bios upgrade that will resolve this major issue? I would rather prefer 7-8°C more on the palmrest instead of the noise! Otherwise this is a laptop not worth the money I've spent for it at all! I seriously think I will give it back and take a Samsung Serie 5 Sandy bridge (maybe less performing and with a lower material quality but silent!) instead.
PS: room temperature at around 26°C
IMPORTANT NOTE:
If you are facing the same issue, in order to get a bios update from Sony, please report your issue to Sony Support here: e-Mail / e-Support
and by email to Sony Support USA at sonylistens@am.sony.com with contact information. Also, include your full model number and serial number:
Issue: Sony Vaio T13 Fan noise
Model number: SVT1311XXXXX
Serial number: xxxxxxxx xxxxxxx
E-mail: xxxx @ xxxx .com
Mobile phone: xxxxx
BIOS 1.6 I heard addresses this issue. Be carfeul on this upgrade tho. I would recommend someone from tech support with over the phone just to make sure the steps done are correct.
mithcd, thanks for your answer.
I can't find the bios you mentioned! Could you pass me the link?
My exact model is SVT1311V2ES
Why do you warn me about updating bios? This is my first Sony laptop but i've owned plenty of laptops before, and updating bios has always been a very safe operation, tipically completely automated by launching an .exe in Windows
Hi stradom.
I'm afraid 'mithcd' is a timewasting idiot who, for some perverse reason, posts stupid and inaccurate replies on this forum. From his answers, under this and other user names, it is obvious he does not have a Vaio and knows little about computers.
It is debatable if he is breaking any forum rules but, in any event, he is able to make up a new username when attempts are made to stop him. One day he may do serious damage to someone's Vaio. I have no idea what he gets out of it but we all wish he would go away or go back to his gambling forums.
There is no BIOS Update for your model - if there is one it will appear here: -
http://www.sony.co.uk/support/en/product/SVT1311V2ES/updates
As your Vaio model is so new, I would report your concerns to Vaio Support. The more reports they get, the sooner they may come up with a fix.
I presume you have Registered your Vaio? To contact Vaio Support by phone, email or online chat, go here, click on 'Vaio e Informatica' and enter your Vaio's Serial Number: -

I adhere myself to the same request. This is certainlly a BIOS issue, because CPUs don't need to run so cool, they are prepared to run up to 50 degrees celsius without any trouble.
The noise it makes drives me crazy at night!! Please resolve ASAP!!
thx, John
If someone else has experienced the same issue, please leave a message on this forum so that Sony will take more seriously our requests.
It could also affect the sales of this model if not solved!
This is a User Forum and Sony will not monitor posts here.
Have you contacted Vaio Support - this is the only way to get Sony to log the problem.
I've done it, but it seems they don't have understood the issue.
They answered:
"I understand that the fan is running at a very high speed all the time also making a noise while running. I suggest that you perform the troubleshooting steps provided in the below links which should resolve the issue. Click on the below link to view the information to troubleshoot when the fan is running at a very high speed all the time:

Click on the below link to view the information to troubleshoot when the fan is making noise or not working:

In case the issue persists, I suggest that you change the power plan and check if it helps in resolving the issue. I have provided a link with the information to customize a specific power plan within the Power Options section of the operating system:

If the issue persists even after performing the above troubleshooting steps; unfortunately, service may be required. Please contact Sony Italy's support team for further assistance. They will be able to advise you of how to proceed with the issue and setup any service that may be required. You can contact them by phone or via e-mail. Click on the below URL to contact the Sony Italy's support team"
It seems completely useless because they did not face the problem, addressing a bios update request.
They also suggested contacting Italian support to me, but Italian support didn't provide me with any answer at all!
Actually could you tell us what temperatures your CPU is running at, use coretemp. Also is it blowing out cool air?
