I am having a great problem with my Sony Vaio K series (pcg-k215b). when i turn the computer on and as windows loads (the initial windows loading screen) the LCD backlight ceases to work. You can just about make the picture out but is very hard to see. To add to this, when windows has loaded, i have a code 41 (drivers installed but hardware not detected) on my dvd-rw drive. to add to this there is no sound but the sound drivers are installed. This laptop is very important to my work and i am lost without it. Any help as to what i should do would be greatly appreciated
Thanks
Jack
I assume you have tried pressing Fn and F6 to change the screen brightness? Does the backlight come on then go off or just stay off all the time, if it is always off the cold cathode lights behind the LCD are probably dead, and you will need to send it off to Sony to be fixed. You will not be able to replace the backlights yourself, no matter how competent you are, it is an extremley delicate procedure. As for the DVD drive, try downloading updates off VAIO link, or running system restore.
Arrange a pickup from VAIO Link if this doesn't work.

A friend has exactly the same problem with a K315z the backlight switches on at boot up and also if you enter the bios, but as soon as the Windows XP logo appears it switches off.
Have you had any luck as it does not look like a hardware fault (possibly!)

Hey Guys,
thanks for all the propmt replies. I was able to get in touch with Sony and they are going to take my laptop off me and sort the problem out. The analyst on the phone said it sounded like a combination of drivers and replacing the Cathode. I will keep you updated on any outcome.
Cheers
Jack
No problem Jack
here to help
I know this has been a long time in the making, but the repair went thru pretty smoothly, and the entire screen assembly was, in the end, replaced, the laptop went back to germany and took around 2 weeks to sort out, but i got it back in full working order, however, i seem to remember it being a good job that i'd backed everything up!
