Laptop speakers remain on when headphones are connected

Hi All,
I am a Vaio newbie.
When I insert my headphone to my VGN-CR29XN's headphone jack, I undoubtedly get the sound through the headphone, but the speakers are not turned off. Instead, I get the sound through both the laptop speaker as well as the headphones.
Any advice on how to overcome this problem is appreciated.
