Hi Peeps,
I'm new to Sony Laptops and after only one week of vista decided to install from the recovery DVD's I created. This installed all the progs etc and the used disk size was about 16gb. On installing a few of my favourite progs this went up slightly to about 18gb, on uninstalling stuff like Works 8.5 and other stuff I didn't want, I then noticed that the hard disk space has reached over 30gb - allowing for the swap file and hibernate file this is about 26gb so has any one any idea why disk size increases when I uninstall programs?
I have emptied the recycle bin etc.
How very odd - it seems that if I hadn't started uninstalling files I would have more space on the disk - not right at all I think - or am I going mad?
Cheers

Welcome to the club,
go into the command prompt and type CHKDSK/F This will free up any orphaned files and consider turning off your system restore and turning it back on. That may retrieve the lost disk space. Then download 30 day trial Tuneup utiliies from here and do all it reccommends. If everything is working it is likely just the system restore is loyal like a faithful pooch waiting to restore your deleted programs.
Hi incprs and welcome.
I am sure that Tony is probably correct that System Restore is occupying a large amount of HD space.
To check this out...
From within an administrator account open the command prompt.
To do so go to Start – All Programs – Accessories and click on the Command Prompt. It may be necessary to right click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
To display all shadow copy storage associations on the system and their size type or paste the following command then press enter:
vssadmin list shadowstorage
Hi Guys,
Thank you very much for your advice, I completely forgot to turn off system restore - I normally use ghost to back up my laptop and prefer it to system restore. Also I ran the chkdsk /f command and this corrected some errors and found some free space - I recovered about 10gb which was nice.
I now have another problem which I'll type in a new post to avoid mixing up issues.
Great forum I've been learning lots of stuff and if I see anything which I can help with I will.
