just wondering if anyone out there can help with this query, I have recently been looking to upgrade the memory on my ar41m to 4GB from the installed 2GB. nearly all the sites I've looked at say 2 is the max, but i cant see any difference in memory between the ar51m and mine (the ar51 being upgradable) is it just the case that the data is old and the 4GB upgrade is ok and will work?
Hi bam bam,
The max. is 2Gb...

Unfortunately, it's less to do with the memory than it is with your laptop's motherboard. I have a Sony AR21S, which also has a max capacity of 2gb. I increased it to 4gb and it recognised it fine in bios (only 3.5gb available, due to limitation in Vista 32 bit). However, performance is EXACTLY the same (possibly slightly slower) as running 2gb, as the motherboard clocks the memory back down to 2gb in order to function correctly.
The AR51S has the new Santa Rosa Platform (motherboard) and this allows 4gb and all future revisions of the AR series will as well.
I was toying with the idea of purchasing an AR51E, which is fairly cheap, and swapping out the motherboard and core components to allow me to have almost a 51S from my 21S, but I'm not too sure how and if all of the components (eg graphics, tv card) would slot in correctly and drivers work with the newer MB. Perhaps someone else can fill me in, as to be honest, Vista shines with 4gb IMHO and I'd also love to upgrade.
