How can I find out if my VGN-S3XP DVD writer can write to double layer DVDs? And if it can't, is it possible to upgrade the firmware or replace the driver? and where could I buy the replacement? THANX!!!
Hi ravaion,
The S3XP SPECIFICATIONS do not mention double-layer writing - so I guess the answer is no. You could double check by looking at the Specifications Sheet that came with your Vaio.
DL support will need a new drive I think.
The VGN-S4XP has a DL DVD writer which MAY be compatible - perhaps someone reading this who has a 4XP could post the drive name and type.
However, at £5 a disc and with Blu-Ray and HD-DVD releases imminent, I'd be tempted to wait.
Thanks for your reply Blencogo
I was also under the impression that the S3XP does not come with dual layer dvd writer so I bought an external one. But just as I was about to unpack it, I came across this website:
http://www.pocket-lint.co.uk/review.php?reviewId=889
The same review has been published in other websites (e.g. http://technology.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,20409-1538433,00.html)
I even phoned Vaio and they told me that the specs are as in their website.
I've looked around for a third party driver and found www.span.com - I phoned them and they say that it is quite likely they will have a double layer for my vaio but couldn't confirm until I get my driver out and give them more details about make and model. BUT they say that all their drivers have flat fronts (not nice on a S-series)
Any other tips anyone?
Thanks
Ahh again Sony make a boo boo!
How unusual? They say things like "fanless T2" when that's utter nonsense, I really wish they'd learn to stop lying to their devotees
