Android Media Remote not seeing KDL-32CX523

Hi there,

Just purchased a KDL-32CX523.  I have an Android phone (Nexus S) and have been unable to get the Sony Media Remote app to detect my TV.  I can ping the TV from my phone and PC and can access media from my PC on the TV so the networking (and DLNA I guess if I can see PC-based media) side of things seems to be working.  To give a little more information on my setup- I have a wireless network, but the TV is connected via ethernet cable to a wireless AP in client mode.  The PC, phone and TV are all on the same subnet and can talk to one another happily.  Media streaming, internet connectivity and the like are all working perfectly on the TV.

When I try to add a registration in the app, I just get a message saying that there are no unregistered devices detected on the network (or words to that effect).  Can anyone point me in the right direction for getting this working?  I had initially wondered if it might be something blocking DLNA access on the network, but given that media streaming from my PC is working (and also media streaming via DLNA between my phone and PC), I think I can rule that out.  I've tried two different Android devices (my Nexus S and my wife's HTC Desire) and got the same results.

TV was given a factory reset and firmware update and still no joy.

Help!

Hello,

this catches a few people out as they download the app to the phone and expect it to work strait away,

you need to go into set up on your tv, scroll to network settings, then scroll to Remote device registration, start registration with your device and they should pair up.

Ah, ok, thanks for that.  I was going by the instructions in the i-Manual on the TV which basically just said I needed simply to scan for the TV from the phone, it doesn't mention going in to registration mode anywhere.

Actually, now that I think on it, I also don't recall seeing a Registration mode option anywhere in the Network settings (which I have poked around in extensively whilst trying to get this working), although, I'm not in front of my TV just now to double check.  I'll have a nose around when I get home and revert back.  I'd still welcome any other input/suggestions just in case my memory is correct.

I'm not seeing an option for registering a device on my television anywhere in any of the networking menus.  As I said, the instructions seem to indicate you just need to scan for the television from your phone and it will allow you to register it upon detection.  Neither of the two Android phones I've tried are detecting the TV.  The TV is on the same network as the phones (albeit the TV is connected via ethernet cable and the phones are wirelessly connected, but this is definitely a supported method of connection).

Anyone have any other suggestions?  I'd really like to get this working.

Hi,

if you have performed the update correctly then the media remote app will work, i have double checked the specs for your tv and it supports it.

you cannot just expect your phone to "find" the tv, you need to "start remote device registration" on your tv and your tv will scan for your phone once you open the media remote app on your phone

this information is from my blu ray player XMB, the tv's work the same way

Yep, the TV is definitely supported, I checked before I downloaded the app (I wouldn't have had I not known it would work with the new TV, in fact it was one of the reasons for buying the TV in the first place).

And, I can expect the phone to just "find" the TV when the instructions (including the ones on the page you linked) say that's how it works.  It's different for the BluRay players, you have to set the BD player in to registration mode.  You don't have to do this on the TV, and, yes, I have all of the settings specified in the instructions set (they were all set like that straight out of the box (or at least straight after the first update)).  My Google-Fu is strong  I did all of the search leg-work and found nothing related to my problem long before I posted here.

As an aside, I don't know if your last reply was deliberately patronising,or if it's been the victim of that bane of many a forum post, where it's hard to gauge the tone someone would be using if they were talking, rather than typing, but it sure came across as patronising.  I'll give you the benefit of the doubt for now and assume it wasn't deliberate though, and I surely appreciate you taking the time to reply.

Anyway, back to the topic on hand.  If anyone has any experience of a similar issue, please feel free to chime in.  Or, if anyone from Sony could maybe let me know the technical details of the media remote app (for example, what network ports are used, any networking gotchas, etc), I'm a techy by profession myself, so I may be able to work out the problem myself with a better understanding of the app itself.

Hello Merago,

Regarding Wireless access point (WAP), the device which you installed to avoid buy Sony dongle :smileywink:,

I know it is working well with you and you can share files between home network devices.

But,

Give it a try (if possible) to register your smartphone with TV using direct ethernet LAN cable first, because i passed through a similar problem and i had contact with the technical support dept. of my router (U.S.robotics) and they did informed me that there is no unification agreement between routers branded companies or WAP how the internal CHIP talking together, so some conflict still there

When you talk about browsing files between them, there will be no problems, but when you talk about using application which is (exe software file) it will be something else,  because some codes are inserted to accept the registration which may not transmitted by WAP

Just my point of view to ensure that your smartphone and TV are working fine without the WAP in the way

Regards,

Merago,

i can assure you i meant no disrespect, if it came across as patronising it was not intended, sometimes with me the words come out wrong and its not deliberate, i just try to help thats all:smileyhappy:,

if i had my tv back by now i would gladly talk you through it, i only had it for a short while and not had it replaced yet, my phone worked with it, and since i only did it the once its hard to remember what i did!.

all my gear is wireless but shouldent make any difference.

@KDL-CX520 - I should have said, I've also tried running an ethernet cable direct from router to TV and get the same problem.  However, I'm beginning to suspect this may be an issue with my router, to rule it out, I'm going to try and get my hands on another one and test.  I'll revert back with my findings.

@Bravia55HX923 - As I said, I did figure it may have just been the post getting caught up in how easy it is to mis-read someone's intentions when basing your view solely on initial impression of the written word.  I've been around the interwebs long enough to know that many people find their posts taken in a way that is a polar opposite to how they intended.  (a lot of folks hate the use of smileys as they see them as a dumbing down of the written word, but there is one huge benefit to them on forums, and that's they can be used to help inject tone and emotional context in to bare text, helping to prevent mis-representation).

Thanks all for taking the time to reply.  I'll try with another router when I get my hands on one and let everyone know how I get on.
