Adding a second Freeview HD tuner

KDL-32CX523. Apart from buying a twin-tuner hard disk PVR, how is it possible to add a second tuner - in order to enable record mode for a simultaneous channel?  How would the KDL-32CX523 arbitrate between the two tuners when one is added externally?

Hi - Indeed, the only way you could do this is via PVR, you wouldn't be able to integrate a second on into the set itself.

Thanks

Many thanks, Catmambo. 'swat I feared!

No good for an HDD 'watch one / record another' facility if you have only one integral tuner! Most TVs are stuck with this setup, it appears. Surely a few quid spent on installing a twin tuner would have been a good sales pitch from Sony, even on a budget model like the KDL-32CX523  😞

Hi Don

Fair point - What I would say is that as HDD record facilities are pretty new to most devices, no manufacturer has yet integrated a second turner as they want to see what the consumer adoption, acceptance and usage would be like. Of course there is a cost implication, but feedback so far has been positive, so it may be a feature added to future ranges.

Thanks

one would think with all the RDR hard disc drive recorders sold over the years would have answered the need, plus all the virgin tivo, sky, and BT boxes with watch and record high tech features, the tv,s a flagging behind a bit, a nice idea would be to impliment a tivo box in a sony tv, then sit back and watch the sales go through the roof!

Give it time and they will start to be introduced

It wasn't that long ago that the first hard disk recorders came out and they were only single tuner.  So to see them incorporated into a TV already is a good thing.

Give it 12-18 months and there will be twin tuner tvs with built in SSD drives giving recording times of up to 500 hours.

I sell TVs for a living and I see the new technology creep into more and more applications.  It's not the fastest evolutionary process, but it gets there in the end.

Personally, if i need to record a program while watching another one, i will look for another device other than a TV with built in twin tuner . it is not the main job for a TV
