i had an slt 35 for christmas to replace a canon 300d. when taking a photo using the auto setting, the auto focus focuses on the wrong part of the subject. i.e. taking a photo of of a face, the camera focuses on the shirt. Any suggestions please?
Hi garethr007, welcome to the Sony Forums
Despite the term 'phase detect' AF, the sensor will lock on to high contrast areas. If you use the default 'Wide' AF mode, the camera will select from one of 15 AF areas, and low contrast portions of the scene - such as skin tones - may be ignored.
Have a look at p93 of the instruction manual (Selecting the focus area) and play around with the various autofocus modes. For portraits involving head-and-shoulders compositions, 'Spot' or 'Local' mode – or even manual focus (see p94) – will give you a greater variety of degrees of control over the usual auto-detection method.
Cheers
Mick
