Hi ananse101 and welcome.

Your TX3 has a U1400 low voltage Core Solo processor (1.2GHz) and can take a maximum of 1.5GB RAM.

Technically, you may get away with Windows 7 but Sony's Support is only for Vista on your model and I think I would avoid Vista.  Many of the Vista drivers and utilities may work with Windows 7 and I'm sure some TX3 owners have installed Windows 7.

It is your choice but with these specifications, I would stick with Windows XP SP3.

With operating systems the standard answer is always "it depends what you want to do".

I picked up a tx3xp that my boss threw away, it had XP on it and always ran like a dog, I suspected there was a problem with the hard drive (and as it uses a 1.8" IDE drive with a ZIF interface, they're not that common so was gonna be difficult to replace).

I decided - screw it, it's going in the bin anyway, let's see if it will take linux. I tried the xubuntu cd which gives you a live trial, it seemed to work, I wiped the drive and installed xubuntu. The intention was just to see what happened. Getting linux to work on laptops used to be a pain.

That was in January.

I have now repurposed my main laptop for another project, my main pc is a desktop machine in my home office. I do a LOT of travelling and the tx3xp is my constant companion - it's battered and bruised but it runs xubuntu like a dream and xubuntu has all the things I need. What's more if I NEED pc stuff, teamviewer into my desktop pc will give me whatever windows stuff I need. But for 99% of the time, xubuntu is more than enough, it's rock solid stable, it just works, you can learn some command line stuff but you really don't need it, it has all the stuff it needs. And it runs really nicely on a tx3xp, can't recommend it highly enough.Wifi, bluetooth, energy saving, sound card, graphics, it all runs.
