I recently bought a Crucial Gizmo! Hi-Speed 256MB USB Flash Drive. My computer has USB 2.0 however does not seem to upload any faster then normal USB but does download extremely fast. Is this normal?
I have a Vaio PCV- RX406, 2.4GHZ, 256MB ram, 60GB. In device manger USB 2.0 hub and enhanced host are shown.
Hey good to see you back Street
Seems strange that it doesn't upload quickly. The speed should be the same up and down.
Try another port maybe?
wow didn't think anyone would remember me, but hey I'm not complaining
Yeah I did think that about the ports, partically as I was using the front ones have heard about problems using front usb ports but was the same using the back ones too. Did try using one of my other workstations and it was slighltly slower on the ones that didn't have USB 2.0, but still increbily slow compared to the download speeds.
I think the Crucial Gizmo drive is just a bit slow!
Have a look at this link I turned up on a Google search for the terms "usb flash drive crucial benchmark".
http://www.d-silence.com/feature.php?id=250
A brief summary is that the Gizmo will do 269 32KByte write operations/minute while it'll do 6522 32KByte reads.
It's not the speed of the interface (USB 2.0) that's the performance discriminator but the speed of the underlying storage technology. Flash just isn't very fast at writing.
The final sentence of the above link, comparing the Crucial with a Lexar stick:
"Neither drive could do even 1/10th of USB Hi-Speed's 60MB/s."
thanks for that vaiodon, very usuful link
