Hi there,
My Vaio PCG-GRT786M with a dvd-rw seems unable to read audio cds and some data cds! This is very annoying as i have to rip cds onto another computer then transfer them across using a portable media!
Is it the dvd drive or the software that is causing this probem!
Any ideas or help would be appreciated
Cheers

Hi
Welcome to the forum.
It's probably a hardware problem given the number of other complaints in the forum.
Apart from reinstalling drivers etc, which I don't think will do the trick, I would contact Sony.
It is more likely to be a hardware problem but there is a firmware update for your model’s optical drive (assuming that it is a DW-U50A) on Vaio-Link which may be worth a try.
Could you maybe give me a link to where that update may be! I dont really know where i am going on this site and it is a 'DW-U50A' model PCGA-DDWGT1
Many thanks

Unfortunatley that hasnt done the trick! im still unable to read audio cd's! What can sony themsleves do about it? - Does the drive need replacing? And if so is it done under warenty? Also i have has this notebook from new but i dont know how many years warenty it has...?
Cheers

I didn’t think that it would do the trick, but worth a try.
Assuming that you bought your notebook in the UK you have a 1 year warranty, two years in German and some other European countries. If it is in the warranty period then yes this is covered.
The only other thing that I can suggest is that you try cleaning the laser lens with a proprietary cleaner, but I doubt that this will have any effect either:smileysad:
