I am looking to do a full system restore, however I would like to be able to choose which applications are installed, is this possible? or do you have to install everything?

I would just like to install the operating system and drivers.........

Make sure you create a set of recovery disc's before you start..

Right, I am almost ready to do a reinstall, Reading the links you provided it would appear that if you cancel the preinstalled software option it not only stops the loading of all software but also all the drivers etc,

I have just downloaded Sony drivers and utilities, (just to be one the safe side,)

Could you tell me in what order do you install these drivers and utilities?

Hi Photoshop Kid,

As far as I can remember the drivers are installed, you only have to install the pre-installed utilities as per Rob's post (below) in the Formatting Without Installing Add On's thread

You need to download the 'Preinstalled utilities'  from http://www.vaio-link.com

You should install:

1 Sony Utilities 
2 Sony Shared Library 
3 Vaio Event Service 

Once completed re-boot your vaio.  You may have to do this a couple of times.

Depending on how many of the other Sony drivers & utilities you have already installed and the model of your notebook.  You may also have to install:

1. Sony Shared Library
2. Sony Notebook Control
3. Sony Programmable I/O Control Device
4. Sony Utilities Library
5. Sony UI Library
6. Sony Extended BIOS Dynamic Link Library
7. VAIO Central
8. VAIO Support Central
9. VAIO Event Service
10. Setting Utility

Try the short list first.

I have just downloaded the utilities for my laptop, I have 9 folders, do I just install them in order,? 1 to 9

Once you have run the vaio recovery utility, then install

Sony Utilities
Sony Shared Library
Vaio Event Service

Once completed then re-boot your vaio.

You may have to install those utilities more than once before the FN keys work

Followed by the other utilities
