Q: dead pixel?

Hello,

I'm new to this forum. I just bought my Vaio VGN-A417M today. I'm very happy with this notebook, but when I booted, I spotted something called a dead pixel :-s. It's being white all the time.

I find it quiet irritating, because I payed ¿1895 for this notebook. Is there something you can do to fix it? Or can I return it for another one?

Greets, Kristof.

Hi

Welcome to the Forum:smileyhappy:

Sony won't exchange the PC for the sake of one dead pixel. I think it has to be quite a few.

Assuming you've only just bought the PC your best bet would be to take it back to the place you bought it from and see if they would exchange it.

This what been posted in vaio-link

Description:

My LCD (TFT) screen has missing pixels (dark pixel) - Does my LCD have a problem?

Solution:

The LCD displays built into all Sony portable systems are produced by highly accurate technology. It should be clear though that no manufacturing process is perfect. On an average LCD display, there are some 2.36 million individual transistors printed onto the XGA display panel. Even with the highest quality standards Sony maintains in its manufacturing process, it is not unusual for 1 or more of these Picture Elements, or pixels, to be stuck in an unchanging state.

A faulty pixel can be recognised as a tiny black spot (where the pixel is stuck), or a constant Red, Green, or Blue spot (where the pixel is stuck). In most cases, stuck pixels are hardly noticeable and should not affect the display quality and working comfort.

Sony wants to stress as well that a stuck pixel is a fixed feature of the display and will not spread to nearby pixels.

Make sure your VGN-A317S meets basic specifications:

* Screen Area: 1440x900
* Maximum number of tolerated stuck pixels: 8

Please contact Vaio Link in case:

* You have missing or stuck pixels being clustered in a small area.
* You believe the number of missing or stuck pixels to be higher than what is listed within tolerance.

I have a DEAD PIXEL too. It is very annoying to see those blue dots. My notebook is SONY VAIO VGN-FS215B.It has just been 1month that I have bought it.Doesn't Sony guarantee that Sony LCD monitors and TVs are not of poor quality?

Take it back to the shop you bought it from quick as you can and say you arent satisfied. You should have a month to do this.

Failing that you're stuck with stuck pixels I'm afraid (no pun honest  )

I am afraid they wont chage my notebook for a new one. If I knew that I would have such faulties I wouldnt have paid too much for a notebook..

I talked to them on the phone(the store which is one of the chain computer shops). They said that they have nothing to do here but they'll bring my notebook to the Sonys Turkey Distributor Service.I'll bring it to them next week and see..

One Word Insurance!!!

Its a smart mans saving and an idiots bane!

(I used to sell PC insurance for years in a BIG UK set of chain stores and they used to go for £200-£400 for like 5 years cover.

Fair nuff that you think their really dodgy, but for a couple of phone calls your old shabby laptop 2-3 years old can be replaced for a brand new one.

I had a sharp and my idiot EX partner kicked it off the bed and bounced it along the floor, knocking one side of the screen bright white and the other normal desktop.

28 days later I got a brand new Sony happend 2 times after and each time an updated model. From an Athlon 1100 all the way to a P4 2.8

And yes each time was an accident, different circumstances though. mind you this Sony is lasting way too long. (Never had a laptop last me a year)

I eat my sandwiches off the damn thing even cart it across london on the tube wid lousy tourists throwing their grubby flailing bodies at it and it still wont break!

It is highly unlikely that software alone will fix the problem, it is a hardware issue with the LCD I'm afraid.

Sony LCD's are not inferior quality by any means. The problem is that LCD's are made from a huge multi-million pound "stamp", and after repeated use it is likely that small pixel errors in some screens are apparant.

The larger the LCD, the more likely these stuck or dead pixels will be. To make absolutely sure, make an RGB bitmap image (255,255,255) pure white, and display this on the screen. It should highlight any problems. Next repeat this with blue, green and red images.

Note that as TR said, Sony only consider the LCD defective if it has more than 5 dead pixels. These can be isolated or clumped in groups.

Unfortunately Sony DO NOT follow the Class I ISO standard which is that if a fault is apparent on the screen, even if it is just one pixel, it WILL be replaced.

I hope this clears things up!
