How can I use the DVI-D port to display onto HD screen

Can anyone help ? I have a Sony A217S notebook and cannot display onto my HDTV using the DVI-D port on the docking station.

Does it need enabling ? and how ?

If I use the VGA port it works but the resolution max is 1280x1024

Any help is appreciated
