There are a couple of possible solutions I can suggest, 1st is th gently blow on the lens, and or try extreemly gently use a lint free cloth to just brush over it. Under my computer, what description is given for your device? DVD player, CD rom? As I recently had a problem which meant a complete system restore.

Hi,
I have tried gently cleaning the lense but that does not help. Under my computer it says dvd-rw Drive.

It was working fine and then when i tried to open it today it got caught on my mouse pad and made a funny noise. I went to put a DVD in and it has not recognised any since. If i try to look at DVD in explorer it shows it as empty.

Before when i put DVD's in it would make a whooshing noise for a while and would play fine but now this noise lasts about a second and stops.

Any ideas.

Many thanks.

Hi bellageorgia

Go to Device Manager Start > Run and type devmgmt.msc..

Do you have any errors codes or icons in your DVD/CD-ROM drives..?

Hi again,

It says it is working correctly and has no errors. I have uninstalled driver and rebooted and this has not helped.

Any more ideas.

Thanks.

Hi,

I have tried restoring to an earlier date last week but it says unable to restore as nothing has changed. I have uninstalled driver and rebooted - no luck. I have gone to Device manager and it says it is working correctly. It will not recognise cds or dvds. Any more ideas would be appreciated.

Hi Georgia,

I would suspect as the problem occurred after you CD/DVD drive tray caught on your mouse mat that your problem may be hardware related and therefore you need to contact vaio support.. :slight_frown:

However before contacting them try running the Vaio recovery utility and select C Drive Recovery. Sony support will probably ask to do this anyway when you contact them..

Make sure you backup important data first..

I also cannot do a System Restore, tried about 20 none have ever worked, it's weird, but if it still recognises the drive as a DVD rw then it is more likely a hardware fault, as Thalamus said, maybe try ringing Vaio-Link, maybe cough not saying you caught it  cough cough with the mouse pad. I did have a problem when it wouldn't recognise dvd's, on my laptop, but a simple cleen of the lens fixed that, if it's not whirring then it sounds like it isn't even trying to read the disk and that it is a more serious problem.

Hi Andy
Does the System Restore say "Restoration Incomplete" or similar?
