Confused re Home Networking

Hi those who know far more than me 🙂

We have a desktop pc, PCV-RZ504 which came with a network media receiver PCNA-MR10a (I think about 4 years old now). My hubbie has just been given a laptop for his new job and we'd like to set up a wireless home network. As you can probably tell I know very little about this and was wondering what else I might need to buy to set this up?

I've done a few hours of wandering around websites - sony style, sony and ebay and all I can come up with is that I need a network adaptor PWCA de30 (which I'm guessing is the link to our broadband?) and I can get the whole thing going...

Am I on the right wavelength? or do I not need the media receiver at all?

Any help would be muchly appreciated!

Thanks
Justine

You are most certainly correct. There is no need for a media reciever.

Hi Justine,

How do you connect to the Internet at the moment? Do you have a modem/router?

To do things properly, you will need a Wireless ASDL Router so that you can access the Internet wirelessly from all your computers without having to turn your Desktop Computer on.

What you need depends on what you already have to connect ti the Internet. You will probably need: -

A Wireless Router (the type will depend on how you connect to Broadband at the moment)
An Ethernet cable from the router to your RZ504
You do not need anything else because your hubby's new computer will connect wirelessly to the router without any additional equipment.

Hello,

I see you want a wireless network.

So tell us how you are currently connected to the internet? Do you have a modem? Or do you have a combined modem and wireless router?

Does either of your computers have a wireless network card or built in wireless networking capability?

Also, this forum has some useful advice

Blencogo: we need to establish if she has an ADSL connection or a cable connection first I think.

Ah - sorry I forgot to mention at the moment I have broadband on my RZ504. Hubbie seems to have wireless capabilities on his laptop as it keeps looking for a wireless network to connect to. So it appears I need something to make my RZ504 send out a wireless link that he can connect to! (I think)

Thanks for your help so far!
