Hi everyone, nice to meet you all. I would just like an official update from Sony UK please as to what is actually happening with regards to this model.
Today at CES2012 a replacment HX853 model has been announced with edge lit LED Backlight, but no news with regards to a replacment 923 model.
I have been considering getting this model, however I seem to read on various forums that this model has so many issues that it's pot luck as to whether or not you get a good one, which is really putting me off buying it.
With Sony's TV Business losing so much revenue, isn't it time that Sony listened to it's customers and resoved the issues on this set. If the issues cannot be reseolved, then shoudn't the set be withdrawn?
Here are my questions :-
1. Rumour is that this set has been recalled for a 2nd time due to the crease issue. Is that correct ? Has the crease issue been resolved on later builds, or will it be ?
2. Inconsistent Backlight Issues - Many owners of this tv have reported backlight issues/bleed issues. Is Sony looking into this ?
3. Will this model continue into 2012, or is it being withdrawn due to the new models being announced/issues.
I hope that this model is not being withdrawn tbh. It is the only Sony model that features a Full LED Backlight Array. If Sony could sort out the issues with the crease/backlight uniformity, then many more peole like me will consider purchasing this set.
I await a response from Sony UK.
Thanks

Hi,
you do not nessessarily need a response from Sony on this, i for one can assist you with your concerns, being one of the earlier adopters of the 55" model i can tell you that the crease/ edge artifact/ un-unifirmity ( the many names which was used to describe it) were found on earlier sets, it took me 3 goes to get a good one!, now, getting to your questions,
1- non of these sets have ever been the subject of any re call whatso ever. info is false, the crease issue to date should be non existent, you will of coarse need to view your prospective purchase personally to be sure your happy.
2- the backlighting issues or inconstistencys are usually down to poorly calibrated sets and are not really an issue, and does not marr the excellent picture quality these sets offer.
3- i think these models will be around for a little while yet, indeed new models come out each year anyway but these will be available till stocks run out.
all that aside i can tell you from a personal level do not hesitate on the purchase of this set, it really is a nice piece of kit, What Hi Fi originally gave this set a five star award until Sony came out with that rediculous remark of un uniformity, but i can honestly say it gets five stars from me, get one!

Hi Bravia55HX923, nice to meet you and thanks for your reply. Sony's flagship model announced at CES yesterday is the HX853 (HX850), which seems to have a similar spec to the HX923 except that it's edge lit and does not have a full array backlight as the HX923.
I'm just wondering if 3D performance and a few other things have been improved, therefore making it a better purchase to the HX923.
Anyway, will keep an eye out on what emerges and then make an informed decision.
Cheers
Hi again,
oh i forgot to mention, this may be a new addition but it certainly not the flagship, the HX923 holds that badge.
Hi, from what I've read on anothr forum, Sony intends to keep the HX923 as this years Flagship Model. I so hope that this is true. If Sony can sort out the crease/backlight uniformity issues with this set on later builds, then I most probably will buy it lol.
I also have a very quick question re sound quality on the HX923. How is it using the standard speakers on the set. Also, Sony do offer a few different soundbars to go with this set. Any recommendations on those please ?
Thanks
Hi again,
i have already covered the crease/uniformity issue in the post above.
as for the sound well this is down to the individual but for many, because these sets are so thin, the downward firing built in speakers may sound a little thin, my advice would be to find a dealer who is willing to throw in the SUB461S speaker stand (i have the 551S on mine) and it sounds good, but then i have a home cinema set up anyway for movies, the stand also gives you that six degree tilt which gives the set a whole new sexy look to it.
so you still there?, thought you'd be at the dealers already!.
Hi, just want to give a quick update with regards to what I have decided.
After much deliberation, I have decided not to purchase this particular model. My reasons are as follows :-
1. From what I've read on the web, every model has the 2 crease lines on it. Whether they are faint or not, or are very noticeable or not is highly debatle but imho, they should not be there and it is not acceptable for a flagship tv to exhibit this kind of fault/issue.
I know for a fact in my case, that once I notice any lines, no matter how faint they are, it will become an issue for me and I won't be able to enjoy the TV.
Also, where I intended to purchase this particular model from, I don't want to go through many different sets until I find a good one. It's hassle for me and it's hassle for the retailer. Purchasing a TV should not be a lottery as to whether or not you get a good one.
2. 3D Performance - Again from what I've read on the web, 3D performance on this tv is not great. Again, I can't justify paying a premium price for poor to okay 3D performance.
3. I just hope that this years new Sony TV models announced at CES 2012 are issue free and quality control has been greatly improved, particularly the HX853 & HX753. If there are minimal backlight issues and 3D performance is greatly improved, then and only then will I consider buying a Sony LCD.
I've been a fan of Sony TV's for many years and still use my Sony 32" CRT on a daily basis as my main tv. let's hope that Sony can go back to the days of the "Trinitron" and produce high quality TV sets that justify the premium price tags.
Thanks
sounds to me like you want to run before you can walk!!!, until you actually view the set for yourself you will never know, if you prefer to listen to what all the forums rant and rave about (and its not just sony sets!) you'll never buy anything, best thing you can do is see for yourself, then and only then can you decide for yourself.
Hi Bravia55HX923, thanks for your reply. Your comments are appreciated and I do understand where you are coming from lol.
I have seen the 55HX923 in my local Sony Centre and I must say that I was initially blown away by the picture quality and the aesthetics of the set. I knew from reading on the web that there had been issues with this set exhibiting the dreaded crease and I immediately looked for it on this display set. The crease was there, on both sides and was clearly visible.
From what I've read on the web, the crease issue does not only affect the HX923, but also the other Sony models that use the Gorilla Glass, ie the HX823, HX723 & NX723.
Now for me, the 2 most important factors when choosing a new TV is 1. Picture Quality & 2. 3D Performance. I absolutely love 3D, much to the dismay of certain friends & family lol.
If I was purchasing a new TV just for the picture quality alone, then it would be the HX923. There is no doubt about it, even with it's niggles/issues.
The new models announced by Sony this year at CES 2012 sound very promising. I've had a look at the spec of the HX853 (HX850 US Model) and it seems that Sony have really improved 3D performance. The same applies with the new NX753 (NX750 US Model).
I do understand that the new HX853 does not have Full Array LED dimming and is Edge Lit with Pseudo Local Dimming, but if it gives a good picture with good 3D performance, then I'll be happy.
Also, one of Sony's Main Competitors has announced at CES 2012 that it will be finally making larger sceen LCD's with the latest IPS Panels.
I do hope that Sony don't ditch making Full Array LED TV's and perhaps in 2013, they will introduce new models using their Crystal LCD Display which was shown as a prototype at this years CES.
Who know though, maybe I will end up going for the HX923 after all.
Will decide once the new models come out and then make an informed decision.
Cheers
Excellent!, being well clued up on all this is half the picture, ( pardon the pun ).
good luck on your final decision.
