My Bravia KDL-40CX523 is a disappointment

Dear Sony and readers

I recently bought two of the above TV's with the hope of enjoying some comfortable entertaiment and using it for all the features that it claim to have. However, I am very very disappointed with the limitations placed on me!

Two disappointments:

First major one:

it says that you can play MPEG, MP4 etc, however, only certain type of MP4 it plays, has a mind of its own(this should be a customer choice and not a TV).

My HTC phone which is DLNA certified has videos and pictures and I cant view them on my screen, both formats are MP4 and jpeg respectively.

Second major one:

Skype is for mobile phones, why the hell do i need a webcam to use the app? why wont sony allow us to use the skype as we use it on the phone!

Third major:

My TV's allows me to record what I see on the screen onto a USB HDD. WHY HAVE YOU PLACED A LIMIT ON THE HDD OF 32GB.

WHY CAN I NOT RECORD EVERYTHING I SEE AND I AM ONLY ABLE TO RECORD DIGITAL BROADCAST?

I am still discovering the different features, so far the disappointment outweight the good features by a mile.

I bought recently KDL-32CX520 which almost the same model as yours (CX52 series)

I agree with you that Sony TVs should support more media files which can be done by Sony thru inserting more Codecs to the firmware...I guess Sony are working arround that issue nowadays...as example the .mkv file and its subtitle which have the highest customers demands in this forum

But Sony were clearly mentioned in adavnce that some MP4 format are not supported, Please refer to the link below

Mobile and TVs are totally different devices , The mobile has its own mic and camera while TV not...any webcam need a driver to play, the driver files are diff. depends on the makers...Sony include only the driver for Skype cam in the firmware because TV don't have CD-ROM or windows operating system to load any webcam driver (this my point of analysis but not sure :smileycool:)

I am not sure what is the reason behind 32GB, but most HDD are over 32GB nowadays, i think your point valid for record on USB flash memory (i have 16GB)

regarding why recording only avaiable from free-to-air digital broadcast, i believe it is related to copyrights issue ,

Did you noticed that your TV don't have RCA video out connectors ??? i noticed that with all TV brand names in the market except the chinese one . Any TV has internet browsing  they disable the video record feature to prevent stolen of HD media

I was saying nearly 2000£ because I also bought other accessories with it like the dongle which cost me 75£ and the extra 5 years of cover for each tv, It all adds up to nearly 2000£

Hi, forgive the joking!, we understand that.

sadly many get caught out afterwards when purchasing a tv with what can only be described as limitations, however many of us tend to do our homework prior to purchase,

this comes in the form of reading reviews placed on many sites and forums often provide a wealth of information,

most dealers should be pretty clued up on what features and capabilities of most tv's are and if unsure always ask for a demonstration. this is particularly important if you plan on buying more than one of the same model tv.

A good answer Bravia55HX923, I am working on a list of specific formats for USB playback and the correct codec and resolutions which are supported, the problem is the codec types and formats are too vast for everyone, I hope to have this information available soon.  there are many posts on the forum what can work, but no specifics....

What does it means the Bravia only able to record digital broadcast? I have a HD Virgin box, it says it only able to record digital broadcast. How can I record any program to my external HDD? I've registered the HDD.
