EX720 proper HDD for USB recording?

Could somebody of you who already use the USB HDD recording function on EX720 recommend me the type of external USB hard disks you use for it? My KDL-37EX720 doesn’t want to work with WD My Passport Essential 320GB.

Has somebody experience with a USB flash disks? The minimum required capacity of the TV is 32GB. These flash disks are still too expensive to buy it and then find out that it doesn’t work too.

Hi,

your Western Digital should work juat fine on your tv, but first you need to format it to FAT32, as for the flash drives i have a 16gb sandisk and i can load tv shows on from the internet and play them just fine on the tv.

Thank you for fast answer. Do you mean to format the HD to FAT32 on computer first? I thought the appropriate formatting will be done by the TV during the first registration of the HD for recording but the TV couldn’t recognize the disk. Ok I will try to format the HD on computer first.

I wrongly formulated the second question. I have also no problems to play content of flash disk recorded previously on computer. But I wanted to ask if somebody have an experience with recording function to flash disk on EX720. For this function the minimum required capacity is 32GB. Then the flash disk should be formated to FAT32 too, right?

Hi,

yes thats right, format on pc first then register it to the tv, one word of caution is that many have commented that if using the drive on the tv is not for them they have trouble re formatting back to NTFS as it is believed that the tv does something to the drive to prevent it from being used elsewhere, perhaps not realising you have to un register the drive from the tv first should you wish to do this.

as for the flash drives these are already in FAT32 and it is also said that these need to be bigger than 32gb to work. also of note that drives in FAT32 wont store any files that are bigger than 4gb.

hope that helps,

anyone else feel free to add.

Hello,

What about the 4GB limitation for one file? Are you able record TV shows or movies broadcasted in high resolution? I suppose a 2 hour length movie in high resolution must be bigger then 4GB.

well i have not got that far yet, that information is on here somewhere as thats how i know of it, as for recording a movie from the tv i have no idea how big the file will be, best do a dummy run on one and see.

Could the 4GB limitation not simply be solved by using the exFat format instead of Fat32?
