Problem updating Xperia Arc with PC Companion

Hello All

I have been trying to update my phone for some time now and it wont work at all.

The problem:

- I connect phone to PC

- PC Companion tells me there is a update for my phone

- I start the update process

- PC Companion is preparing my Computer

- PC Companion is preparing my phone

- Phone shuts down. (should not be happening i suppose)

- PC Companion pops up a window with 5 steps  (Im translating the Steps from Dutch to English so it might be different than the actual english steps)          

     Step 1: Disconnect USB cable from PC and Phone

     Step 2: Check if the battery life is more than 50 %

     Step 3: Turn off the phone and wait 5 seconds (Problem is the Phone is already shut down.)

     Step 4: Connect USB cable to PC.

     Step 5: Press and hold the Return button while connecting the USB cable to your phone.

Ive followed the above steps a few times and each time the phone will not update. Ive held the button for over 10 minutes and nothing is happening.

Does anyone have a solution to my problem ?

My Windows computer is running XP SP2 and PC Companion will not work as the minimum OS is XP SP3. The Sony Update Service slimshaddy links to will work but it installs a pile of Java. Make sure the phone is completely off when plugged into the computer when using Update Service.
