I attend to this error in notifications several times each day.
I'm not asking it to update mind you. It's trying this all of it's smarty pants x10i self.
When I actually do bring up the facebook application it acts ok.
The one thing this x10i can't do is upgrade to adobe flashplayer. There are places that tell me I don't have video on my phone in order to view the news clip or whatever.
It's not a big deal to me and don't really need it.
It would be nice to turn off the facebook "unable to update" in my notifications, without removing facebook entirely.

See the last message in theis thread from ag4751 about using Flash and using the Skyfire browser (currently in beta form) to help you see videos on your phone... http://talk.sonyericsson.com/thread/8603?tstart=0 The Facebook thing - is that in Timescape? You could remove Facebook as one of the tile options for the 'spline' and access Facebook separately, though that might be what you didn't want to do. I have never got that error message (and I only have mine connected to the internet through wifi at home), but try playing with the Timescape options to see if removing automatic updates, or customizing the tiles or splnes helps.

I forgot about timescape, yes there is a button in there and I was able to click it from updating every three hours to "never".
I'll go look at that thread then about video and scarey operating stuff, but I doubt I'll engage in trying to mess up my phone. Thanks.

your connections are going to sleep when the phone is not active - if FB's check coincides with one of these periods it will be unable to update

That's probably why I don't get the message - I only update it when I choose to, so automatic updating is switched off.
