Be smart, backup, be aware

You own a beautiful Xperia smartphone.

Hope you're acting smart as well.

  • Choose a screen lock
  • Write down your PIN, password or pattern
    • Too many people are confronted with having forgotten their secret unlock code
      • When that happens there is one option left: a total reset and all data are lost. (UNLESS you have setup auto backup on your device)

  • Let Google backup your device
    • Swipe down from the top of the screen with one finger twice or with 2 fingers once
    • Tap on the cogwheel and you're in settings
    • Scroll to System -> Backup and switch on <Backup to Google drive> and <Google photos> -> Backup & sync. (Do not forget to read the Back up & sync help by tapping the ? in the top right corner of the screen)
    • Read the Google backup help page on the internet.

  • Keep your photos safe (not really safe but recoverable)
  • Insert an SD card in your device and  place your photos there
    • You can copy your photos from SD card even when your device is blocked.
    • Open camera -> tap cogwheel for settings -> scroll for data storage -> choose SD card
    • TIP In camera settings tap the ⓘ in the upper right corner to learn how to use the features of your camera
  • Let Google save a copy of your photos for you
    • Open Photos (the Google photo app), tap the Hamburger List icon top left, tap settings, tap Backup & sync
    • If you choose High Quality you will have unlimited free storage of your photos. (not in their original quality)

  • Find my device - in case it is stolen or you just left it laying around somewhere.
    • Goto settings -> Security
    • Activate 'Find my device'

  • Add honest finder information on your lock screen
    • Goto settings -> Display -> Lock screen preferences -> Lock screen message
      • You can add a phone number who to call in case your phone is found

  • Add "In case of emergency" to your unlock screen
    • Goto settings -> About phone -> Emergency information
      • Add medical information
      • Add emergency contacts (only name and phone number will be shown)
    • Test by opening your phone, do not unlock and tap on Emergency

  • The SUPPORT app
    • Your entry point to all information you need
      • Contact customer support
      • Check the state of your device
      • Read the manual
      • Learn to make better pictures

A note:

There are people around who are afraid to give information to Google.

If you are you should not have bought an Android phone.

Your personal data at Google is protected by their privacy policy  but do realise how much information is collected by Google

Now that you're in the Google hemisphere: use it and enjoy it

HOWEVER BE AWARE AND TAKE CARE!

Hello @Strampke,

thank you for that guide. While I was already aware of most of these points, other might not be, so in my opinion it is a very nice summary!
