Error Camera may be in use by another application

Hi,

I'm experiencing this error on my M5 at the moment.

"Error

The camera may be in use by another application. Please close the other application and try again."

I've tried rebooting, factory reset, safe mode, and clearing data/cache of camera app. Nothing works!

I just got my M5 and I'm disappointed by this.

The camera worked fine the first week only. I haven't done anything to my phone nor did I drop it to cause such issue.

Can someone help me out?

I had this issue since the 7.1.1 android update and this seems to have sorted it.

  1. Remove all permissions for camera app in settings>apps
  2. Restart phone
  3. Launch camera app and toggle on permissions when prompted
  4. Camera launches and works (for me anyways)

I followed the instructions above on my partner's Xperia XA1 having tried a number of other suggestions on this forum and it worked (for now at least).

This was to fix the fact that neither front or rear camera was working, just a black screen with the camera controls and a message saying the camera was open in another app - which it wasn't.

This would to me point to it being a software problem, or potentially a problem related to power or temperature, not faulty camera hardware otherwise the fix above wouldn't work. The phone is on Android 7, and it was plugged in and charging at the time I tried this fix. Plus I had powered it off for 15 minutes or so, therefore it had had a chance to cool a bit. I mention this as it may or may not be relevant.

Hope it helps others.

UPDATE 13 JANUARY 2018

An unfortunately short lived triumph, stopped working again after taking 2 photos. So yes Sony should look at this problem themselves. I used to work for a major Japanese electonics company myself, and I remember the Japanese used to take great pride and worked really hard to address problems on products, as they felt it was their responsibility to offer products that were up to the mark. I wonder what happened, or maybe no-one from the Japanese team is shown these forums..?

I just experienced this problem. I try to reset my phone, after reset the problem is still the same. Suddenly my camera returned to work. May be caused by launch mode. I close the launch function for the camera. Success. Good luck.

I got this error 30 mins ago on my xperia m4.. Luckily, I was able to solve it in 2 mins only.... Just check every app on your phone and clear data... Then check the Permission. Uncheck camera if you know that the app doesnt need to access the camera. Then restart your phone. Good Luck!
