Hi i've recently bought that system and i'm wondering will it play ".iso" files from external hdd?
Solved! Go to Solution.
Hm that's interesting...I'm downloading it now and will try it as soon as possible.
Big thanks man and happy holydays.
Hi there
According to the specifications : HERE - the following below are whats playable.
Therefore *.ISO playback is not supported. I doubt any bluray players could do so either, it would require a more dedicated Media Player.

Well actually it plays ".iso" (connected to the PC via wi-fi router) using "Home Media Server" which have a directory for those kind of files, but the problem is that it takes some time to see the file properly or something ,at first "not ready" is written before the name of the movie and wen the"not ready" dissapears its good to be watched.
My main problem is that the movies doesn't run smooth (somethimes DO but mostly DON'T) like you know ,you have a weak video card and you're trying to run something big on it.
So I'm wondering if I can eliminate the PC with all those complicated server programs and just play the ".iso" from external HDD?
(I'm sory if something is wrong written I'm not so good in english)
If you are using wireless, try connecting it up with an ethernet cable instead (reducing a wireless issue). Also, more than likely the PC is doing the transcoding of the ISO file, therefore hammering the CPU of the computer. Check your CPU usage to see if this is the case. Also if they are like 40GB+ ISO files, well...........
If you really want to see if it will play via an external drive, why not put one on a USB drive and try it - it will either work or it wont
If you really want to play ISO files (im assuming they are either Bluray or DVD ISO's), go to this website : HERE and filter your requirements for a network media player.
I would probably extract the media files from the ISO, and convert them to a format that is supported.
Thanks for the quick reply...
Its connected with the cable,
watching CPU is smart i havent thought about that and will try it,
I have allready downloaded RESIDENT_EVIL_RETRIBUTION_HDCLUB.iso (40.8 GB) and trying to play it ,but its allready decoded so nothing on the CPU now.
however it dosen't want to play it (dont know why) even it sees it as a video file (recognises it as a M2TS),its trying, its loading, the little cyrcle in the upper right corner i running but after a minute it gives up...
About the external...I want to try it before buy it, but it appears that no one around me have one and that's the reason I'm writing on the SONY site to see if someone actualy have done it that way.
Thanks about the site link (didn't know it) ,will check it out,but I was kind of expecting to do it with the SONY gear...but if not...its an opportunity.
So basically I think something's wrong in the transfer or the PC isn't strong enought to do the job so that is why looking for alternative...
By the way the router is 150Mbit/s
The PC is Intel Pentium 4, 3000 MHz ,2GB RAM , WIN XP/SP3
About the axtraction of the files...that is one way to do it but there's a lot of space needed , which I don't have.
cheers
Hi there
As you have found out, a 40+ GB file will not play properly. I believe this would mainly be due to the network limitations, its far too big to stream over the network with a 100Mbps interface. To be honest, im surprised that it allowed you to get this far, even with the ISO.
I understand that you want to try it via external HDD, but unfortunately, i do not know if it will work.
However, there is another alternative too. You can extract the files in the ISO file and convert the whole movie to an MKV file. Have a look at a program called MakeMKV : HERE - Its easy to use and quick to run. It will also reduce the file-size as well as you can get rid of the parts of the BDISO that you dont need (reducing filesize even further).
Hope that helps
