Hey there!
The Xperia 1 IV has a huge SD card problem. Reads are very slow(around 20MB/s) and writes are completly buggy.
When you start writing large files to the SD card it starts very fast at almost 100MB/s. After 300 to 500MB written the transfer just stops and waits sometimes for up to 10 seconds then starts again.
Currently I'm using a Samsung PRO Plus 512GB (MB-MD512KB) and a SanDisk Extreme 400 GB ( SDSQXA1-400G-GN6MA).
Both cards work fine in my Galaxy S9+, Note 9 and all USB cardreaders I have. Every app has this problem. For filemangers I tried Google Files, Total Commander and Cx File Explorer.
Is there maybe any workaround until Sony releases an update?
hello @TheBadFrag
might I asked what files are you transferring to the device and how or what method you are using?
I mostly just copy over large video files I recorded from the internal storage to the SD card. So its just sequential write.
I am already in contact with the support but they have no direct support where you can accually get in touch with a technician who understands whats wrong. So yeah I don't know if that helps much.
I have tested my SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB & 256GB on a Xperia 1 IV using Total Commander & Google Files to copy 4 large files (1.6GB-ish in total). It took 78 secs !! That is a "whopping" 21MB/s on average.
When copying each file, the progress bar of Total Commander was frozen for 8 - 9 seconds at about 3X% to 5X% randomly. very similar to OP's observation.
I also tried testing on a lower end Toshiba 128GB card and came up with similar results.
I think that should be one of the bugs that should be addressed, it doesn't look serious but am sure it's annoying.
Everyone please contact the support about the SD card issue!
I'm in contact with them for at least 3 weeks and the only help was basicly "have you tried restarting your phone?" or "all of your apps are the problem!". I even told them that this problem exsists with all SD cards and a stock out-of-the-box phone.
The SD card speed gets even slower when the phone is turned on for longer periods. So you have to restart the phone multiple times a day to restore a little bit of SD card speed.
We need to get this fixed the SD card slot is basicly useless now. This phone is for making videos but if you filmed 100GB of video and try to make space on the internal memory IT TAKES FOREVER!!!
They even locked the apps so you can't even record videos the SD card even tho every alternative camera app records 100Mbit/s+++ video to the SD just fine. Just give us a warning when recording directly to the SD and don't lock it!!! This is bullsh*t!
It would be so much better not having to wait houres for the videos to copy and rather record them to the SD directly.
This is the most annoying problem of the many that this phone has currently.
Hey TheBadFrag, I've noticed it's been a while, what happened with Sony support?
They ignored me. Haven't heard from them since 2 weeks.
Last eMail was basically "the phone works fine we don't care".
I guess there will be no more updates for the phone the support is totally useless. So sad that just a bit of software ruins such a good device. 🙄
Is maybe anyone out there who can hack the Video Pro app so we can enable 4K120 and 4K60 recording directly to the SD card? That whould help so much. This is so painful when you need to wait houres to free up the internal storage for more video recording.
WOW today I got another email! 😲
Now they want a picture of the SD cards I use... For what ever reason that should help 😂 Sony has never seen an SD card before? No wonder the SD card slot is broken. 😁 I send them the picture anyways so lets see what comes next I'll keep you updated.
May be they will say you have got a fake card or a broken card.
I will be surprised if they can identify that you have a bad batch card with compatibility issues. I tried 3 cards.
Anyone, even without any tech background, can pickup a known good card to test and verify this.
