WiFi between desktop and Laptop

I use a Sony RX405 which is broadbadn enabled (USB broadbandmodem)

I use a Sony Z1RSP laptop which is WiFi enabled (802.11b)

What is the recommended set up to enable me to go wireless broadband with the laptop? Should I consider a router AND a wireless card for the desktop ?? Or is there an all in one router which will plug directly into the desktop?

Since you already have a USB modem you need to keep that pc online for the laptop to get online. Then your pc will serve as a router. You say your notebook has wifi enabled so you don't have to buy a card for that. Now you only need a PCI wifi card for your desktop and make an "ad hoc" connection. Something like a wireless cross-cable in stead of straight cables to a seperate router.
But you cannot use more then 1 wireless machine at the same time with that..
And its best to buy a small antenne you can put in a good location near your pc. the metal case right in front of the antenna does NOT do the signal much good
