Vaio notebook heats up alarmingly

Hi Friends,
I do not know you have experienced this or not, my VGN-FS315S heats up after 10 min of boot to an extent that i can not touh the bottom of my notebook,
Is my FAN giving problem or something else, i can however hear the Fan noise.

Pl. suggest what could be the problem.
Thanks,
Abhishek jain

Hi jain and welcome to the Club.

If you are using XP try downloading MobileMeter and let us know the CPU temperature and the HDD temperature under loading.

This will give us an idea of what is overheating.

Hi i am actually using notebook hardware control www.pbus-167.com , i can run it in two modes CPU Speed 800MHz and 1.6GHz.
In 800 MHz the CPU Temp is around 48 degree C and Harddisk is 29 degree C
In 1.6GHz the CPU temp is > 80 degree C and Harddisk take a while to reach 50 degree C

In the later mode i cannot even touch the base of Laptop.
Obviously i am using now the former mode and in this the speed is slow.

This oveheating was even before installing Notebook Hardware control .
Expecting an expert help soon,

Thanks,
Abhishek jain

That temperature of 80 degrees for the CPU is far too high.

You either have a faulty fan or your cooling ducts are blocked with dust.

Try a can of compressed air and blow through the cooling vents.

If this does not work, you may have to take your Vaio apart to clean out the dust properly or get someone else to do it for you.

I attach the instructions of how to take your Vaio apart, the fan unit is on page 10: -

No point in frying your system before you follow Blencogo's excellent advice as it is likely to be overheating till it is fixed. Type in MSCONFIG in the 'Run' or 'start search' and in the start up dialogue box disengage any unneccessary programs as per the example from mine as I now realise I have a load of pointless programs bogging down my system on startup. Another thing to consider is turning off the aero for vista.

Thanks for replying to my thread.
I have now applied Vaccum Cleaner (Hoover) to the laptop and finally the CPU temp shows some decline intermittently on 1.86 GHz mode, the fan seems to work now , but still at times the temp is reaching 82 degree C at times,

Is there more dust, i mean the possibility , should i open my unit ,

Pl. reply,
Thanks,

Hi Abhishek jain,

Be careful with the vacuum cleaner - the static electricity is not good for your Vaio!

Try blowing with compressed air - if your processor is not below 70 degrees C, it will probably need taking apart.

A hoover  You might as well stick your FZ in the washing up. If you can't get compressed air you can get battery operated little computer vacuums especially if you take it apart for more delicate cleaning. For now turn off the vista aero at least. It still looks pretty and will use 16% less RAM...vista is unbeleivable
