Hi Carl,

Try turning off your Firewall. If Windows Messenger and updates then work you will need to adjust some settings to allow both programs full access through the firewall – or if you are using Norton then preferably ditch it and use a more user friendly firewall.

Also make sure that you have the most recent version of Windows Live Messenger installed.

Hi Rich thank you very much for your prompt attention, although Norton came preinstalled on a 60 trial I did not reinstall after doing a recovery. Any suggestions

Hi Carl,

In that case is Windows Firewall turned on? If so try turning it off.

When you say windows firewall you are not following the very wise advice of our Rich. Turn off your nortons firewall or navigate in Nortons to its 'Programs' dialogue box and 'allow' all AOL events you can find. My mum uses aOL and AOL quite often needs to be reinstalled. Call the AOL tech guys to check you settings are right ...but they are usually really ...hard to get along with is the best way of putting it....

I just finished reinstalling my whole system from trying to use a 64bit version of windows, which didn't go too well.

I found that when I was using 64bit most of the updates kept on failing, I was getting error 80072efd. Is that the same error that you're getting?

When you're updating do some of them successfully complete, but the majority fail? That's what was happening to me - I got around that with persistance, I just kept on restarting it and getting the next few.

Hope this helps.
