***Noisy Fan? All Vaio Notebook owners should read this***

It's no secret Sony Vaio notebooks are noisy as hell, and it's all down to one particular componant: the fan.

For the first few months it's perfectly fine, but after that most owners will find the fans become irritatingly loud to say the least. However, all is not lost, as I've just discovered after trying out a few tips I came across online.

The main cause of fan noise and over heating is dust -- it clogs the fan and insulates the notebook causing it to over heat. What this calls for is a good old fashioned cleaning, and you'll be truely suprised at what a difference it makes to the noise.

Here's what you do:

1) Unplug your vaio from the mains and remove the battery pack.

2) Inspect the notebooks orifices, especially the fan vents. If you see substantial clogging, get a cotton-bud, cut it down so it can get into the nooks and crannys, and gently wipe away the clogs.

3) The next part involves holding up the notebook and blowing into the orifices, either using your mouth, or a can of compressed air if the clogging is particularly bad or you just dont fancy a mouth full of dust. ;o)

If you're using your mouth like i did, Hold the laptop up to your mouth (lips toucing the vents) and blow as hard as you can into each orifice of the laptop, paying particular attention to the fan ducts. while your at it, also blow into the battery pack slot, the wireless card slot, the usb ports and the memory stick pro slot.

You may be wondering why I chose to do it by mouth rather than using compressed air, and the reason is that compressed air comes out at speeds that could easily over rotate your fan and cause it to break. If you do use compressed air, dont hold the nozzle directly against the vents, hold it a short distance away as to not over rotate the fans.

4) dust and wipe down the surface you place your notebook on. Make sure it's clean, dry and dust free. For all you people who use your notebooks on your beds, I urge you to get a tray to place it on as placing directly onto the bed not only causes it to overheat massively by blocking the fan ducts, but allows the laptop to suck dust and particles straight into the notebook from the sheets.

After a thorough cleaning, you should notice a big difference in noise. Mine is a lot quieter now.

I'm suprised that a corporation like Sony doesnt include documentation simular to the advice I gave above considering the big difference its made for my notebook. I hope all of you find my tips useful.

Don't worry about the double post.

On occasions the forum burps and spits out the same post twice. This was a legitimate mistake.

Unfortuately, you cannot delete your own posts, such is the wisdom of Sony they decided not to give us such a feature.:smileyraised_eyebrow: :tired:

Still, as Kee-Lo said this is a well-written guide.

Well done. Very helpful indeed.

Isn't it the software that doesn't allow it rather than Sony admins?
