No sound...help!

Hi
Was wondering if anyone could help me....
For some reason i have to keep reinstalling the sound drivers on my vaio! i can get start up sounds and warning sounds etc, but cant hear anything else. Once i've reinstalled it, it works for a bit and then i loose it again!
Also my task bar keeps turning grey!!!
Any help with this would be appreciated! I'm a bit clueless when it comes to this kind of stuff! And i'm lost without sound!

I wondered if you'd found any solutuon for this, as I get tyhe same issue with my Vaio desktop RS 704, except I get all media sounds as well as system sounds, then it all goes till I re-boot. As it logs off, the XP logoff tone sounds, and on re-booting, the login tone sounds, and I'll get normal audio on everything till it goes again.

I did wonder at one point whether it was a heat issue, but that wouldn't explain why the logoff jingle plays. I've put more RAM in (now 2 Gb) which for my use is surely fine.

I'm loath to uninstal the sound card/driver in case I never get it back !

Did you ever solve it ?

No i'm afraid i never did get it solved! The thing is, it doesnt happen all the time, just sometimes! Very strange. Like yours, mine is fine when i reboot but then all of a sudden the sound will just go again.
Its a real pain to be honest but i'm not really sure what to do about it.
If you find a solution to the problem please let me know. Mine is still under guarantee, so if it doesnt get any better i may take it back and let them deal with it!
Its probably something really simple but i'm not very technical and could do with some guidance!

Hi there Sammie .Just come across your post - I asked for help with the very same problem a few weeks ago ! The advice I was given was to disable the auomatic updates facility and so far today my sound has stayed put even after many shutdowns and re-starts ! I also noticed the toolbar at the bottom would turn grey like yourself and then i knew that the sound had dissappeared , the font type also seemd to change eg. the time and "start" icons looked different too . I am hopeful that this has been resolved now with fingers firmly crossed. Will keep you informed . Strangely enough I removed Vista from my PC due to sound problems and have gone back to XP quite happily. Automatic updates with vista caused my business design software to get stuck in a loop , it would cause a complete system crash time after time . i had no choice to remove Vista as without my particular software my business was in trouble !! I think theres something to be said for choosing what to intstall . Hope you find this helpful - let me know if it works . Best wishes , Nicky .
