I want to upgrade the CPU in the VAIO XL201 from E6300 to Q6600. Looking at intel CPU specs looks compatible but need to source an updated BIOS. I know its an Asus motherboard but cannot identify which model from any software like PC Wizard. an anyone tell me what the motherboard model number is or even better point me in the direction of the latest BIOS from Asus?
P.S I am running Vista.
I doubt that you'll find a BIOS for download. It's a custom board made by Asus for Sony and there's no download link on the Asus server for this mainboard.
Besides, the Q6600 produces more heat (TDP 95W) compared to the E6x00 CPU's (TDP 65W).
Thanks FHB. Do you know which processors can be supported by this custom board and the existing BIOS?
I have no further informations. Like you already know from PC Wizard, the board's named NIACIN, on the PCB itself you find the name P5BW-MB. That's really not much information.
Considering the time the board had been developed, I'd guess the BIOS will support E6x00 CPU's. A E6700 might work because it's very similar to the E6300/E6400 CPU's.
But this is only my assumption - no guarantee that it'll work.
Thanks for the help. I think I will wait until the price drops before taking a risk on the E6700.
