I have a PCG-F801 Notebook and a PCVRS404 Desktop and want to connect these two together. I have attempted to do it using i-link but failed!! I have therefore purchased a Netgear FA511 10/100mbps network adaptor card.
I intend to connect this into the network card of the desktop.
What do i need to configure in the notebook to set up this network connection? Do i need to configure anything in the desktop?
Thanks.
Does your F-801 have a built in network card?
If yes then set up a local network via network neighbourhood.
No it doesnt thats why i bought the network card.
I also have an ethernet cable to connect the two but i have been told that i may need a "crossover ethernet cable" What is this and why?
Cheers
Tim
I'm no expert, but,,
I think you will need a network card for each machine, that way they can "talk to each-other".
As for ethernet
Hi,
Assuming that you have ethernet ports working and enabled on both machines, then you will need a cross-over ethernet if connecting them directly to each other. If you are connecting them via a hub or switch then normal ethernet cables will work.
If you are running XP, then once the cables are connected run the network wizard which is pretty self explanatory.
Ok, this is what i have done. The desktop computer (RS404) has a network card but the notebook doesnt. I have bought a network card for the laptop and installed it. I have the laptop set up and when i click on Network Neighbourhood i can see my "Home" network with the laptop, but no desktop computer. I have connected them using a crossed over ethernet cable.
I have also ran the Windows XP home network set up on the computer, it has established a "Bridge connection?" but i cant see any details of the desktop on the laptop network neighbourhood, nor can i see and "home" network or anything on the desktop when i click on view my networks.
What am i doing wrong???!!! Is there anything else i need to configure.?
Tim
Hi,
You might need to 'share' a few folders for them to appear. From memory the wizard does have something about computers directly connected to each other. I'm not sure if this results in a 'bridge' being formed or not.
You may need to run the same wizard on both machines.
in CONTROL PANEL, use the SET-UP wizard to create the network. It will create a small program which you save to floppy (or Memory stick etc).
run this program in the other computer and the network should be set up.
there should then be access to a shared folder on each machine.
Thanks guys. I forgot to mention that i already tried that!!! When i configyured the PC using the wizard, i then made a disk and transfered that to the notebook running Windows98. Used the wizard again on the laptop.
As i said when i go into network neighbourhood on the laptop i can see my "home" network listed. When i click on that it should then list the computers connected to my home network (right?). However only the laptop is listed. On the PC i think there is an option "to view my network places" and when i click on this i get an error message saying that there arent any!!!
Hellppppppp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is driving me mad!!!! Unfortunately i am at my work computer so am tryingto remember all this of the top of my head.
Cheers
Tim
Hi,
All the machines probably need to be on the same workgroup. I'd suggest that you check the network connections and make sure that they are on the same subnet (255.255.255.0)
Are you certain you are using a cross-over ethernet?
