You might have the sonic stage mastering studio audio filter on which can do this.
Go to start>programs>sonic stage mastering studio>audio filter and turn it off

Welcome to the Club,
If all else fails right click on my computer and do a system restore to a time before the problem occured but bear in mind you will uninstal any programs you have installed since that restore point.

Sorry Sim Sim my mistake. Go to the control panels and click on Performance and maintain. On the left side you will see System Restore (if you switch off the folders view by clicking on the folders in the toolbar) In System Restore it will give you the option to restore to an earlier time . Do so and try to remember when the system started sounding like you're in the loo on the great white telephone and restore to a time before this. Restore and it will restart and inform you that it has done so and voila fixed dunny sound.

On the volume control, under advanced options, some onboard soundcards have the option for '3D sound' Turn that off.
