I have FZ11M, it's 4 months old. Everything was ok, but at some point i started to have problems:
- generally lower performance (even things like scrolling a web page were slower)
- hard drive working when imho it shouldn't, it's loud now (it wasn't before) and it makes sounds like... clicking? o_O
- it's too warm (it wasn't so warm before) and it... you know... like... smells weird. i don't want to be paranoid but it really does 😕
- i have problems with keyboard. i've thought that it's turning off by itself, but now i see that it's... slowing down. when that problem occurs i can type but system will recognize pressed key if i'll hold key down for 0.5 min. that problem occurs irregulary.
i've thought that it's software so i've reinstalled system (Kanotix - it's basically Debian Etch with drivers ;). now i *think* that i can scroll pages a little faster (gosh) but performance is still bad, that keyboard problem appeared once, there's still unusual hard drive activity, laptop is hot and i feel weird smell.
any ideas? anyone?...
is it hardware?
what should i do? it's barely usable!
(and please, don't give advices for Windows, i'm not using it. i'm currently on Kanotix - Debian GNU/Linux flavor.)
Welcome to the club,
and welcome to the unhappy vista club. The hardware is designed to run vista hense the insufficient complement of drivers for any other operating system even XP. You're a pioneer and after being a 64 bit user I know how you feel. I'm not familiar with your platform but I assume RAID is still engaged through the bios. This may be the problem. Run whatever diagnostic tools you can and back everything up on an external hardrive and try running the system without RAID from the bios by tapping F1 on boot>advanced>select show raid>restart>use the control i keys and disengage the RAID ROM run from the bios. and reformat on the new standard uncomplicated HD. It will run slightly slower than RAID but at least its likely to be more stable and consistant on your OS platform.
READ THE FUCKIN POST AGAIN. You didn't answered my question at all. I've used Kanotix on that laptop from beggining and EVERYTHING was working. I didn't had any problems before at all, i had 4 months of working, stable and usable laptop. And now that problems started - i didn't changed anything in the system that could cause it. I even reinstalled it (while it's stupid because linux usualy doesn't need that) and problems still occur.
It was working propetly before, gosh, it's not that i installed Kanotix now and problems started - IT WAS WORKING PROPETLY FOR 4 MONTHS.
(and hello.)
EDIT:
ah, and i have drivers for everything except camera (i must check, maybe there's update). everything was working and Kanotix made that laptop super-fast but now it's dying withouth a reason.
I say again
your Sony Vaio system hardware is engineered by Sony Vaio for VISTA and you are experiencing a degraded performance due to latency generated system conflicts that only an unprescribed OS platform can cause especially if the bios is clinging on to a RAID configaration that is vista orientated.
By the way if you speak to anyone in the foram like that again I will have you banned but I'll let it go as I appreciate the frustrations you must be experiencing after my experiences living with 64 bit platforms that don't continue to run like the wind after a while.
We don't work for Sony and all of us are long term users of Sony equipment and some of us have been nominated as CVE's because we are enthusiatic and like to think we know what is going on. In your case it is likely you will need to reformat every 4 months depending on how fragmented your system gets using unorthiodox open source OS and softwares that are also specified to work with windows OS

well the problem is Sony Link website will only warranty consider and repair preinstalled conventional operating systems for the exact reasons pointed out before. I would factory reset everything back to its definative state and sell it. Alienware laptops are famous for open source operating systems compatability...trouble its they cost a bomb.
