Hi silversandstorm and welcome to the forum.

This is a guide to replacing the hard drive in an A115B but the basic architecture will be the same as yours. Click here.

Thanks go to RobPaxton for the link.

Thx for the link. It was very helpful  I have removed the hard disk now, but now (you'll laugh) I'm wondering about removing the cd-drive. You ask why, well I should start at the very beginning: A few months ago i bought this nice VGA-417M notebook (and was very happy with it  ) but last saturday the cd-drive didn't close anymore. I called the sony hotline and they told me to send the notebook to them and they would repair it, because i still have warranty on the laptop. I also asked about removing the hard disk, because I have a lot of personal data on my hard disk. The sony-hotline-guy told me that this is no problem. But it was! As I wrote above i couldn't find any instructions how to do this, so i wrote in this forum. But now I'm wondering if it's possible to send just the cd-drive to sony ( it was such a hard work to open the laptop). Or is this a breach of warranty (cause I'll lose warranty by opening the notebook)?

I have come across this dilemma once before, sending the notebook in without the hard disk that is, and I don’t really know the complete answer.

If Sony says that it is no problem, then OK, but the very fact that you have opened the up the system seems to indicate that you have invalidated the warranty – catch-22!!

I doubt that they would just accept the CD drive, but you never know. Best to have a word with support tomorrow and get them to confirm any agreed procedure in writing (don’t mention that you have already opened the system).

Let us know the response – it will be of interest!

Edit: Sorry, have a word with support on Monday - they are not available on Sunday!

It's no problem that i already opened the notebook, because the support said I CAN do this, if I don't want to sent the notebook with hard disk to them. At this point of the conversation i thought it's easy to remove the hard disk, but as you know it wasn't. Now the opened notebook lies in front of me (thx again for the manual) and I'm thinking: "why should I send the entire notebook? I could just send the cd-drive to the support" Is nobody of the sony-support team here to clarify this question?

But if not, the best thing would obvious be to wait until monday and call the support again (I hate calling hotlines:smileycry:)

This is a common misunderstanding – we are all Vaio users here, no-one from Sony support:smileysad:
