Fe31M and 4gb RAM

Hello all,

I've read that my laptop besides Sony said it only supports 2gb RAM, that if you install 4gb, the windows recognizes 4, but only uses 3gb... Well, and if we installed Windows Xp x64, Vista x64 or Windows 7 x64? Do you think that it would be possible to use the maximum of RAM (4gb)?

It is just that I need more RAM that only 1Gb, and I'm buying a new hard drive...MAybe 500gb 5400RPM...

Or do you have another idea for supporting 4gb RAM?

Thank you

Hi HugoFSousa,

The maximum amount of memory that your model will accept is 2GB. This has nothing to do with the operating system, be it 32 or 64 -bit, but is a limit due to the motherboard architecture.

The VGN-FE31M has two memory slots and each will recognise a maximum of 1GB.

Actually, there are more than 1 person that says that after installing 4gb in this model, that it recognizes 3072MB in BIOS and 4GB ram in windows device manager though it can only use 3069MB according to task manager!

So, I think I'll just keep on going with my SO, or upgrade to win 7 32bit then...

In that case I stand corrected, but as Sony and most suppliers of RAM state the maximum amount of RAM supported for your model is 2GB (not to exceed manufactures recommendation) you are of course risking damage to your machine by exceeding 2GB.
If you really wish to take that risk then this may be of interest to you..
