DVD write speed on my vaio

How do I get my Sony DW-520A to write to DVD at More than 2X speed it says it can write at 8X but when I put a 8X DVD-R in it will only write at 2X speed?
Please help I have searched the forum with no results.

I have found TDK DVD +R discs to be very reliable, I have problems in the past burning to cheaper DVD's

Hopefully you will have more success with the new Sony DVD's.. 

Thanks for all the reply's I have just tested the sony disc and it worked fine at 8X. So it was the disc's after all.
