I have a Sony KDL-32CX523 TV and wonder if i can use a external hard drive without a power source other than the USB port, to record programmes ?
Thanks in anticipation .
Hi,
this question often pops up on here and the answer is somewhat contradictory,
Sony recommend the Western Digital my book essentials powered HDD for recording using Bravia tv's,
however Sony have two non powered versions in their product list for use with compatable products, these drives store photo's and video's for playback on Sony tv's but its unclear if these will actually record anything from the tv's.
i use portable hdd (hard disk 320GB+controller+USB cable) for KDL-32CX520 and working fine
What hard drive do u have?
I was thinking of getting this one : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-500GB-External-Portable-2-5-USB-Hard-Drive-/330470222765?pt=UK_Computi...
Hi again,
seriously stick to Sony's recommendation or you will end up with more problems than its worth, the USB port wont handle decent sized drives without its own power supply,
if you use one without it may not work at all, dont forget when you get one to format in FAT32.
There is always a risk when you buy something new...my 320GB don't have external power but it is Verbatim with Western digital HD inside so it is working fine ...i bought it long time ago and i found it is working with my new Sony.
If you can borrow other brand name from a friend and give it a try before going ahead to eBay, it will be good idea.
Backup its content before you start the trial.

That is the problem though ,
i cannot find their recomendations , and like you say they do conflict in their product usage
,
do you think they just want us to buy stuff , are times that hard !!!!
