I have for many years been using a Sony TV, and soon learned there were some movies the TV didn't like to play, and so I downloaded a converter, in its menu there is the Sony TV. So all output files have since played without a problem.
I bought the KDL40WE663 for the bedroom, have a Amazon firestick plugged in, have Netflix and Amazon working via the firestick or the TV app. So finally I get around to testing playback from my west and digital network drive (NAS) while I have managed to get some files to play, there are many that play on the old TV but crash this TV, it gets locked, only a power off at the wall can reset it.
I wouldn't mind if the TV says it cant play it, then I would find the file type it likes. BTW I can play the movie from any PC or laptop to the TV by right clicking it and select cast to > KDL40WE663 this works without any problem.
So whats up with this stupid TV?
yes checked for updates, it has the latest, it did do an update for freeview play, else everything else seams to be fine Some files that are DVD mpeg 2, always played without conversion, but many needed to be converted to MP4 to keep the size down, and all work fine on other TV's including a Sony 3D, and Samsung. But they all lock this TV up I see the network drive, select folder, select file to play, crash without any warning, no way to get out, power off at wall.
I used media info to get file spec

So I found some firmwear, not from Sony, it installed a much better media player and server, now everything works, even plays DVD's via DLNA
