Unable to Sync to Reader

I have a PRS-600. When I connect to my computer it automatically opens the Reader Library and recognises the Reader. However instead of me being able to select the sync button the sync appears to start by itself. However no sync actually takes place and the blocking sign on the reader shows. I am then unable to close the programme without restarting the computer. It is therefore impossible to download to the reader.

I have the latest updates but to be sure I reloaded them from the Sony site but to no effect.
