Check out this site for some ideas of where to get free ebooks, and this video explains the syncing process.
Hope this helps?

I also live in Ireland, My first 2 downloads went without a problem. I downloaded free books from www.ebookr.com. I registered and got 3 days to download free books. In total I downloaded 14 books. Then I went to Reader Store and like you find I cannot download any of the books. Reader for PC seems to stop working at Sync stage, It seems a lot of people have this problem (I googled and saw at least 7 people with it). It may also be that reader store is not available for Ireland. When I did my inital settings I set up Other as country/region and Reader Store didn't even appear on my home page. It was only when I changed to UK as country/region then it appeared.Hopefully you can download from the above website.

Firstly books from WH Smith, Waterstones, Kobo etc are all compatible with the T1. Theses sites provide books in epub format of which the T1 is geared to reading.
It may therefore be that living in Ireland is the issue as there are geographical limitations placed on books.
The second thing is, with regards to the Adobe software have you authorised the reader?
As for other sites, you could try Google books, The Book Depository. I've used Books on Board in the US, so you could give it a try.
