shooting HD and saving SD?

Hi everybody, I bought a Handycam HD because it allows me to choose between HD and SD standards, among all the other reasons.

Now, I ask you, is it possible to record in HD (and saving those files for future use) and directly import in SD standard before editing the movie?

Need I to find some particular software (Mac or PC, it does not matter)?

Otherwise, could I save HD footage to file and subsequently convert it in SD format with some software before editing it?

If you are going to do a lot of video work. Mac and Final Cut Pro 7 will handle any of your formats. Go into Google and type in the above software.

There are other software like Vegas etc.

I use FCP7 and can deal with any format of video.
