We have a problem with our Sony 24-70 GMII lens. Our previous ND filter broke, but a piece (adapter) of the ND filter is still attached to the lens and we can't get it off. This means we can't attach our new ND filter tot the lens.

We cannot remove this piece with filter clamps. The only option is to use pliers, but we are afraid that we will damage the lens.

Is there any way we can still attach a new ND filter? Perhaps with an extra adapter/step up/down ring?

This usually happens when the filter ring gets jammed. I’d avoid pliers because they can easily damage the front threads. A repair shop can safely remove the stuck adapter with proper tools. Using step-up/down rings won’t really help if the original ring is still stuck on the lens. Better to get it removed professionally before forcing anything.

Sometimes a rubber grip, lens wrench, or even a thick elastic band gives more torque without scratching the lens. If that fails, a camera service center is the safest option. Forcing it with pliers can permanently damage the front element or threads.

If the ND filter frame is stuck, try cooling the lens slightly or using a rubber jar opener for extra grip. Avoid metal tools at all costs. Unfortunately, no adapter will fit properly until the broken ring is removed, so professional removal is usually the best solution.
