a55 Firmware Upgrade Failure - Camera Bricked

Hi

I just tried to upgrade the firmware of my brand new a55.

Followed all the steps and I get to the very last part, when you click "run" to upgrade and I get an error message saying "Upgrade aborted due to error" (see attached file for details)

Problem is, I now own a 4 day old £600 brick...and it is not fun.

Any ideas?

Thank you, I got it soretd in the end but not without a bit of a headache!

When I posted this the failure was on a Windows 7 64bit PC. I don't think the power to USB should be an issue as the machine has an Asus iCharger feature which basically means it can provide higher power to USB to charge iPhones and such quicker...

However, I thought I'd better try it on a different PC as well...problem was, all of our other PC's are Macs...

So, I installed Windows XP in Parallels on my Macbook Air...no luck...could not even get past step one!

I could not use it on the Mac itself as it does not support Lion OS...(64bit)

As a last ditch attempt, I formatted the MacBook Air and installed Snow Leopard, ran the update and it completed fine.

I then also updated the firmware of the new a65 we bought...no problem.

So I am not sure whether it is a windows issue but anyway, I now have two cameras both on the latest firmware

Hello PsychoDeliUK

The first thing to try is running the firmware upgrade on a different PC - this is just in case there was a USB based error at the time that can be resolved on a different computer. I have had a similar problem with some other devices in the past because there wasn't enough power running to one of my USB ports and so this may work for you as well.

If this isn't the case, it may be necessary to contact Sony Customer Services for a repair where your A55 will be returned to the factory presets. They can be contacted using the details in the following thread:

Hopefully this will only be a last resort though i.e. if the camera is completely unresponsive or 'bricked'.

Thanks,

Simon
