This doesn't work as it says you need to enable side sense which I don't want as I'm getting false registering of side sense

Try long press on an icon on the home screen, including the 5 at the bottom that are on each screen. One option is split screen (the exact way the option is given varies). This also works on icons in the app tray. An occasional one does not give an option, but most do.

Do you have a cover that blocks the sides?

It's higher than the sides but it doesn't work without the cover anyway

1. Launch the first app.

2. Swipe up the little "pill" button at the very bottom of the screen. This will trigger "App list" mode. In this list each app will have an icon at the top.

3. Click the icon above your app. There you will see a "Split screen" option for that app (if available).

4. Select "Split screen" option for your app. It will make that app enter split screen mode.

5. Select the second app from the same app list. Or exit the "App list" mode and launch the second app separately.
