It can be caused by the system looking for keys in the registry that no longer exist or/and by the number of startup processes, many of which are unnecessary.

For possible registry problems you could try a registry cleaner.

http://pcsupport.about.com/od/toolsofthetrade/tp/free-registry-cleaner-programs.htm

If you choose one of the utilities linked and a ‘Tuneup’ utility is included I advise caution – just use the registry cleaner.

To examine Startup processes press Windows key + R and type msconfig in the ‘Open:’ field > click OK then click the Startup tab.

You could also examine ‘Event Viewer’ to see whether it gives any indication of the reason for slow boot time.

http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/window-on-windows/use-windows-7-event-viewer-to-track-down-issues-that-cause-slower-boot-times/3253

Rich
