I think the mainboard of my old FX705 notebook is broken. Does anybody knows if it's possible to get a new mainboard as a spare part?

True Seb. It could be many problems and a new mobo may not cure it. The system battery for CMOS in newer VAIO's is the main removable laptop battery itself.

If I use my labtop at home. I don't use the batterie. I use only the energy supply. (don't know the correct translation, I mean not the energie from the battery)

So, actually I had time to do some tests this weekend on that notebook. HD seems to be good (DFT on a different notebook gave me no error codes).
But, when I'm switching on the notebook, I get the led for power, I can hear (and see) the CPU fan running, the HD is running too as well as the CD-drive - but nothing else is happening. no screen, no BIOS, no led flashing that tells me to access the HD - nothing!
Does anybody have an idea?
Maybe the RAM module (only one, it's the original 256MB module in socket 1) does cause the problem?

Usually you get BIOS beeps to indicate there's something wrong with the RAM.

No - nothing, also no beeps.
I put the RAM module in slot 2 - no success.
CPU?

Could well be.

Had a similar thing about 4 years ago, and the CPU was the problem (AMD Thunderbird IIRC).

I've a Thoroughbred Athlon XP mobile 1500+ running on 1300MHz (100 MHz FSB) low votage 1,1 V.
What did your notebood doing by switching on? Same symptoms like mine?
Do you have any idea which max CPU I can use by replacement?
The FX705 has a VIA KT133A based chipset which is able to run FSB133 (on desktop PC). The RAM module is also a 133 MHz model. Do you thik I can use a mobile Athlon with 133 FSB? Maybe a Barton core with 512 kB L2 cache like copied list below...(thanx to http://myplc.com/sony/)....
AXMS2000GXS4C 1533 MHz 266 MHz 1.25V 0.13 micron 20.00A 25.00W 95°C organic Barton 6A0

This CPU needs 1,25V (25W) instead of 1,1 V (16W) originally.

Mine was in a desktop (self-made)
I'd suggest sticking with the Thunderbird CPU, using a different type is just going to make things more complicated.

You'll be lucky to find a new one now.

Please do! I have exactly the same problem, with the difference that sometimes it DOES boot normally and everything is ok until I move/tilt the computer a bit.

I am very worried and would like to know what it is...
Anyhow A LOT of people have virtually the same problem - does this mean the same thing broke or are there more things which can cause very simillar symptoms?

So, after a year I gave the notebook to a sony workshop. They replaced the cpu and it worked fine.
Same time I added a 256MB RAM module to upgrade to 512MB and it's working fine.
Maybe some of you are interested in the type of module - it's a Kingston with lifetime waranty. You can select the module type at kingstons webpage. Thats working perfect.

Well - the problem is identified and solved.
