Home network FE11M

Good day,
I have a problem with my new laptop. Iconnected it with my other two PC's at home with the network card. Now I can get to the internet but I don't have access to the other PC's and the other PC's can't get eccess to the laptop.
There is no password in the network and there is firewall. But I still get the note that access denide (no permission). There is also an other thing. When I open Network places I don't see any file, also the shared files on the laptop don't appear there!!
To give a complete view, the IP are set to automatic, and they are all checked.

Please help me.

Hi moufaq and welcome to the forum.

Have you run “Setup a home or small office network wizard” on each of the computers. You can access this via Network Connections.

Thank you for your fast reply.
Yes I did run it. Everything seams working OK, but I still get (no permission to access) on all PC's (the other PC's on the network say that they don't have permission to access and the laptop says that it doesn't have permission to access the network.
The internet works perfect through the bridge.

Hi moufaq,

Try turning off your firewall and see whether you can then connect with the other computers. If this works then it may be necessary to create a rule for the firewall to allow all incoming and outgoing connections from your router address.

Normally as Rich suggested to solve network problems with XP is to start again and run the "set up a home or small office network". on all three computers..

I have also found a possible solution on the MS support site headed cannot access shared files..:smileyconfused:

Hallo,
I've done all that (also following the link of Thalamus) sevral times (now I have bridge nr. 7) but no change.
The internet is OK and the network is nul, only with the laptop (Vaio).
The problem is not only no network with the note (no access permission) but if I add more files to the shared files, they still don't appear in My network locations. My network locations is always empty. I mean also the shared files on the Vaio don't appear in My network locations on the same vaio!!!!!!

Hi moufaq,

Can you detail exactly how the three computers are connected to the network i.e. through a router (ADSL residential gateway), are they connected via Ethernet cable or wirelessly and any other information that may be relevant.

Also, when you ran the Small Office Network wizard which options did you select?

You mention that you have several bridges – If you have just one local area network you should not have any bridge just an internet gateway (your router).

Hi Rich,

I connected two network cards on one of the PC's (main PC) and the internet comes to this main PC (ADSL via USB connection).

All cables are cross (Ethernet cable without router). One network card connected to a PC and the other to the Vaio laptop.

Every time I repeat the Small Office Network wizard on the (main PC) I get a bridge with higher number. There is only one bridge now but it is number 7.

The options which I selected in the wizard are:
main PC: connected directly to internet, share it with other PC.
other PC and Vaio: connected to internet through other PC.

I've just called the Vaio support. They said they don't do anything about the software and settings. I told them to forget the problem of the network, and give me the solution of the problem that I don't see any shared files in My Network Locations, I don't see even the shared files of the same laotop. My Network Locations is always empty.
I've repeated the instelations of the Windows (from the harddisk), and then downloaded the updates from the Vaio and Windows. So, he has a new and complete instalations. And still you don't see anything in My Network Locations (also no shared files of the same vaio). They said that it is a setting problem, so they don't do anything about it.

Back to the network problem. The icons of all hardware and those of the network indicates no problems, there are no yellow triangles, nor other notes.

When I search for the other PC's connected, the vaio gets no access to workgroup so it don't find any PC. The other PC's find the Vaio. But they can't get access to hem.

No change occur when I shut the firewall.
By the way, there is a button to shut the wireless and bluetooth connection (at the front of the Vaio). I shut down this button from the first day I bought the vaio. Can this button have an effect on the network connected by the ethernet cable???!!! I can't check it now because I'm at work and the vaio isn't by me.

Hi moufaq,

Well you seem to have set up the system correctly for your hardware configuration. The most puzzling part is why you have no shared folders visible in My Network Places!

Check whether the setup wizard has turned on ICF (internet connection firewall) and also that the name of the network workgroup has been entered correctly on each machine and that each machine has a unique computer name.

To disable Internet Connection Firewall:
Click Start >Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections > Network Connections.
Right click the LAN connection and click Properties
On the Advanced tab click settings and turn off the firewall.

I don’t think that the Wireless/Bluetooth switch will have any bearing on your LAN connection.

I agree with Rich, you've not put your network in a "safe zone", in the firewall, so it thinks you're a hacker.

Hi,

That was a long night.
I've shut the firewall and the antivirus.
I've took hem to the friend (who has a PC with XP and without internet, so, no viruses).
It is the same. The PC sees the Vaio, but can't access it. And the Vaio don't access the workgroup and don't give any connected PC's.
What I also checked is My Network Places, on the other PC. That was empty even when I added more shared files, before connecting the Vaio. But when the Vaio connected and when the PC found the workgroup and the connected Vaio, all the shared files on the PC appear in My Network Places.
So, the Vaio don't see any workgroup and no connected PC's, and therefore My Network Places stll empty.

Then I changed the connection at home, I connected the Vaio to the second PC. The problem is the same. The PC sees the Vaio but can't access it (no permission, or no access) to the Vaio, and the Vaio don't see the PC because ( no permission, or no access) to the workgroup.

I've checked the IP's, firewall and antivirus again. There is no blocks, no conflicts.

I give up.

With the Firewall off on all computers,

Do the chosen drives show as "Shared" on all of your PC's in "My Computer"?

If not right click them, choose the "Sharing" option (plus additional sharing options) on each and afterwards reboot each computer before accessing "My Network Places".

I find my home network very flaky with XP, sometimes suffering problems similar to yours. However next time I log on the problem has disappeared.

After long discussion Sony support eccepted to have a look on it. I've told them that I didn't buy an empty computer, but a computer and the programs on the harddisk. Therefore, not only the harddisk is their responssiblity. The guy on the line said that he will put it as a hardware problem and he will describe the problem. I hope that they don't open it if the hardware don't have a problem.
I've send it to them and now I have to be patient.

Hallo,

Yesterday I got my VAIO back. Sony said that they didn’t find anything wrong, so they didn’t do anything.
I connected hem to my network, and the situation is the same. A friend told me to remove Norton antivirus, because it might be the cause. When I did everything went good, the shared documents appear normal and the other PC’s can see the VAIO and use the shared documents.
I restarted the Vaio with my finger on F10 to reinstall it to the fabric installations, which I did many times before. But after this time the network connection worked perfect. Now the VAIO works well with the antivirus (Norton).
The only thing which I did different from the previous times is that I let the antivirus complete his download and setup, which I interrupted before, because I didn’t want it.

Now I want to thank you all for your reactions and help.

Anyway glad you sorted it out. Oh and dump Norton, it's trouble, AVG works better and with less RAM/CPU usage
