tv/sound bar problem

I have recently purchased a Sony KD-55xh9505 TV and am struggling to connect it to a Samsung HW-J6501 sound bar which I used with my previous Samsung TV with an HDMI cable.. I have confirmed that the sound bar is still working and the TV seems to recognise that there is a an item connected but will not deliver any sound output. The shop where I bought the TV is suggesting that the two items are not compatible. I have not heard  that before bearing in mind how many different brands of sound bar are available. Ant ideas on what might be the problem and the solution and if there is a compatibility issue would a optical digital cable be any help?

In which port are you connecting the soundbar on the TV?

@brihe123

If the soundbar supports HDMI ARC, you should connect it to the port marked as ARC (usually HDMI 3) on the TV as I'm sure @rooobb is alluding to.

That said, some soundbars that don't support HDMI ARC use the HDMI connection for pass-through and an extra (usually Optical) connection for audio.

Hope this helps!

@brihe123 @Joe_Dohn @rooobb

A fairly simple check on the Samsung soundbar confirms it has ARC:-

HDMI transmits video and audio signals simultaneously, and provides a clearer picture.
The unit is also equipped with the ARC function which lets you listen to sound from your TV through the Soundbar via an HDMI cable. This function is only available if you connect the unit to an ARC compliant TV.

And it ought to say ‘to the HDMI port marked ARC’.

So, @brihe123 check which HDMI port the soundbar is plugged into on the TV, and make sure it is the ARC one.

If it still doesn’t work, try a different HDMI cable.

Please let us know how you get on!

Thank you all for your replies. I can confirm that I am connecting the TV in the HDMI ARC/eARC port and the soundbar in the HDMI out(TV-ARC) port using an HDMI cable which works fine when connecting a Samsung TV to the same soundbar. However no success, so the shop where I bought the TV have agreed to send an engineer to sort it out.

Regrettably I am still struggling with my sound bar problem. The engineer from the shop came out and was unsuccessful. He decided that the HDMI cable I was using was not good enough but was unable to prove that since he did not have an HDMI cable himself. Despite the fact that my cable had worked fine between two different 5-year old Samsung tv's and the sound bar I have bought a new cable manufactured by AVF. which is quoted at 10.2 Gbps , 1080p and 2K/4K . However this new cable is still unable to do the job. I am beginning to believe that the problem lies with the Sony TV. Does anyone have any alternative ideas.?

Hello,

Have you tried different HDMI ports? But first try to unplug the TV from the mains with anything connected, then plug it back after a few mins with nothing else connected and test again.

You need also to make sure that your TV software is up to date. What is the current software version?
